Cottage Grove's History

Cottage Grove, Oregon, has a rich history dating back to the mid-19th century when settlers arrived in search of fertile land and economic opportunities. The town flourished with the rise of the timber and mining industries, particularly in the nearby Bohemia Mining District, where gold was discovered in 1863. Over time, Cottage Grove became a hub for agriculture, commerce, and transportation, with its historic Main Street serving as a focal point for local businesses and community gatherings. Today, the town embraces its heritage through various preservation efforts, including its historic district, which showcases early 20th-century architecture designed by John Hunzicker. One of Cottage Grove’s most famous landmarks is the Centennial Covered Bridge, built in 1987 to commemorate the town’s 100th anniversary. This pedestrian bridge, constructed using salvaged timbers from older bridges, spans the Coast Fork Willamette River and serves as a picturesque reminder of the town’s covered bridge legacy. Cottage Grove is known as the "Covered Bridge Capital of the West," boasting six covered bridges, the most of any town in Lane County. Additionally, the Bohemia Gold Mining Museum offers a glimpse into the town’s mining past, featuring artifacts and photographs that highlight the area's gold rush history. Whether exploring its historic buildings or scenic bridges, Cottage Grove offers a charming blend of history and natural beauty.
